Legacy Project 2026

What we have in plan for Milan

Dr Costanza Alvisi, as the Coordinator of the National Commission for Policy and Institutional Relations of Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), in agreement with the President Prof. Giuseppe Galloro and with the collaboration of members of the Commission is pleased to present the extra-congressional project for ESGE DAYS 2026.

This initiative that is developed in partnership with the Lombardy Region and ESGE, is sustained by “Osservatorio Metropolitano di Miilano “(Gen. Camillo De Milato President) and “Fondazione Bambini nel Cuore” (Dr. Carla De Albertis President), and it aimed at raising public awareness regarding colorectal cancer (CRC).

Why we are doing it

Colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of oncological mortality worldwide. Of particular clinical concern is the recent and alarming increase in incidence among the younger portion of the population (approximately 1 in 10 cases diagnosed in individuals under 50). This demands profound reflection on the cultural and social challenges required to keep up with the rapid technological and diagnostic-operative evolution of our field.

The adoption of healthy lifestyles — by addressing risk factors such as poor diet, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity — contributes significantly to the primary prevention of approximately 40% of all cancers, with a specific impact on CRC. In this context, prevention and early detection play a decisive role. It is therefore essential to implement strategies aimed at fostering both a culture of prevention and, above all, risk awareness among citizens.

Convinced that healthcare protection requires synergistic collaboration between institutions and healthcare professionals, we have proposed a SIED-ESGE partnership project, placing citizens at the center of the information process, to the Lombardy Region. The initiative was approved and supported by the Presidency of the Lombardy Region, the Regional Departments of Health, Family, Social Solidarity, Disability, and Equal Opportunities, as well as the Directorate-General (DG) for Welfare, CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) Lombardy, and local authorities.

The Project’s programmed activities are:

  • Secondary School Event (May 14th):
    • Active involvement of approximately 300 students during all sessions, featuring testimonials from professional athletes (CONI).
    • A focus on nutritional education: interactive dialogue between culinary students and a famous food blogger.
  • Public Awareness Event (May 15th):
    • State-of-the-Art Update: Insights from the Lombardy Region Screening Center, the National Screening Observatory, CONI, and Clinical Nutrition/Educational experts.
    • Multidisciplinary Talk Show: A high-level discussion involving the Lombardy Region DG Welfare, Federfarma, Scientific Societies (SIED, ESGE, GISCOR, ANOTE), The Bridge Foundation, and Patient Associations.

These initiatives are leveling up with Immersive Augmented Reality System, a revolutionary educational experience for all ages focused on prevention, starting with primary care. Through AR headsets, both kids and adults can take a deep dive into the human colon to see firsthand how it works from exploring the microbiota to watching how different foods impact our bodies and how polyps actually form. It’s an immersive journey like no other, with game with points that indicate correct behavior

We use cutting-edge tech and a language that speaks directly in particular, but not only, to the younger generation, making the vital message of prevention high-impact, visual, and impossible to forget. Ultimately our strategic vision is that this synergistic institutional initiative, the "Lombardy Region Model", will serve as the inception of a structured and permanent collaboration between institutions and Scientific Societies. Furthermore, we aim for to become the foundation of a certified and shareable model reproducible nationwide, focused on enhancing awareness of the national colorectal cancer prevention campaign. Consolidating a consistent and transversal culture of prevention could positively impact the Essential Levels of Care (LEA - Livelli Essenziali di Assistenza), ensure better public health protection, and serve as a fundamental cost-saving strategy. By limiting the risk of undiagnosed disease, this approach yields a significant positive impact on the overall sustainability of the healthcare system.

ESGE Days legacy project with SIED
Our past legacy project in Barcelona

ESGE Days 2025 was not only about gathering endoscopy profesionals to exchange, innovate and learn, but also about engaging with the local community, with the first ever ESGE Legacy Project.

The focus was on colorectal cancer prevention and awareness, and different actions were carried out in the city throughout the week of the event and after, leaving a legacy that will stay within the community for the years to come.

The project was made possible due to collaboration with the Barcelona Convention Bureau and the Association Against Cancer in Barcelona. The hardworking and dedicated teams that supported the project included representatives from;

•    ESGE Young Endoscopists Committee
•    European Society of Gastrointestinal Nurses and Associates (ESGENA)
•    Dr. Henke Medical Training + Education
•    Colorectal Cancer Screening Office of Catalonia
•    College of Pharmacists of Barcelona and the Centre
•    Cohort of ESGE industry partners (details below)

The project included:

•    Supporting and highlighting a long-term CRC awareness campaign in Catalonia
•    Conducting an interactive session on healthy habits at a local high school (team pictured in photo above)
•    Supporting an awareness session at a local market and homeless center
•    Hosting the ESGE Days Fun Run & Walk
•    Including scientific sessions presenting the data from the long-term CRC study undertaken in Catalonia
