We are excited to offer this new course focused on endoscopic procedural sedation. Under the direction of Professor Stefano Romagnoli, Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Careggi Hospital in Florence, Italy, this course will offer a limited number of participants the opportunity to dive deep into critical aspects of sedation in the clinical setting. Professor Romagnoli will be joined by an expert ESGE faculty and the course will be closely aligned with the new ESGE guidelines and curricula on sedation which are currently being prepared for publication.
New in 2026: Safe Sedation Course
This highly practical course is taught in two sessions, combining theoretical instruction and hands-on training. Please note that this is an exclusively in person course.
The first session will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 12:30 – 19:00, prior to the core ESGE Days 2025 event (Thursday, May 14 - Saturday, May 16). It will feature practical demonstrations on the following topics:
-
Pre-endoscopy assessment and evaluation
- Patient monitoring and equipment
- Analgesic and sedative agents
-
The Nurse's Role in Sedation
- Adverse events and rescue, basic airway interventions
The second part of the course will be a 1,5 hour hands-on training session during the core event. These sessions will involve practical training on the Aqai sedation model which allows for simulation of real-life sedation scenarios. A maximum of 8 participants will be allocated to each session ensuring that all participants have adequate time to perform tasks on the simulator.
"A safe sedation course is critically important for the safety of both patients and clinicians. It provides the essential knowledge and skills to properly administer sedatives, effectively monitor patients, and manage potential emergencies.
All personnel administering sedation must be able to recognize and manage complications, rescue patients from deeper-than-intended sedation, and maintain airway and life support skills. This training significantly reduces the risk of adverse outcomes, ensuring the highest level of patient safety during procedures.
It is a fundamental requirement for any professional involved in procedural sedation."
Separate registration is necessary for the Safe Sedation course. Come as a team - we highly encourage nurse and doctor pairs to attend together. Full registration details, including the different prices for doctors and nurses, are detailed here: Registration fees.
Participants are required to attend both the theoretical/practical and the hands-on training elements of this course.
EACCME/CME accreditation is being applied for. Attendance certificates will only be issued to those delegates completing both parts of the course.
